and Highlights of Chontales
Juigalpa
Juigalpa is part of Chontales, famous for large
cattle ranching and strong traditions. Here
you can find many pre-Columbian pottery items.
They are located in the local museum. From Nacital
in Acoyapa tourists can enjoy some fantastic
views of Ometepe.

Museo Arqueológico
Gregorio Aguilar The Gregorio
Aguilar Museum contains some of the most spectacular
pre-Columbian pottery, coin collections, paintings,
history and gold handcrafts. One of the most
incredible items is a small rock in shape of
an iguana used to work the corn, the main food
during hundreds of years. This rock was found
in Santo Domingo.

Río Mayales
The Mayales river in Chontales is famous for
its panoramic and scenic beauty and also for
the many tourism attractions and facilities
that are situated on its shores.

Puerto Díaz and
Punta Mayales Puerto Diaz en
Punta Mayales are situated on the shore of Lake
Nicaragua, surrounded by cattle farms, grassland
and large farms. In the horizon, the visitor
will see the Hato Grande Mountain.

Comalapa
and Cuapa Surrounded by cattle
ranches, farms and grasslands, if the visitor
is interested in seeing some destination a little
off the beaten path, Comalapa and Cuapa are
two quiet little villages. Here, strong religion,
traditions and local culture combine with the
tranquility of rural Nicaragua.

Acoyapa
y El Nancital If the visitor
is interested in culture, traditions and Nicaraguan
history, Acoyapa, the second largest city in
Chontales, offers some interesting hints. Colonial
arquitecture buildings still present are some
of its highlights.

Santo Tomás
y San Pedro de Lóvago
Near Juigalpa, the little cities of Lovago and
Santo Tomas are great destinations if the visitor
is interested in seeing rural Nicaragua, and
also the cattle ranching traditions and lifestyle.

Villa Sandino y El Coral
Many pre-Columbian objects have
been found in El Coral and Villa Sandino. Here,
in the far east of Nicaragua, the people live
from milk production and cattle.

La Libertad
y Santo Domingo La Libertad
and Santo Domingo are two little towns in Chontales.
The region was famous for its gold presence,
many years ago. Today, the abundance of gold
is very rare, however, locals still work in
the creeks and rivers looking for gold.
