| Lakes
of Nicaragua

Nicaragua is also famous for
its lakes and lagoons. Some of the lakes have
been created by tectonic depressions, or the
movement of land masses. Others, especially
smaller lakes and lagoons are the result of
volcanic activity. These freshwater lakes and
lagoons contribute to the amazing scenery Nicaragua
is famous for, combined with amazing volcanoes,
tropical forests, colonial cities and friendly
people.
Lake Nicaragua
Definitely, Lake Nicaragua is among the most
famous lakes worldwide. Its size and beauty
are two reasons why almost every visitor that
comes to Nicaragua wishes to see it. Also, Lake
Nicaragua is the only lake in the world that
is inhabited by freshwater sharks ( Bull Sharks
) that swim in and out of the lake through Rio
San Juan River. Lake Nicaragua is also surrounded
by beautiful volcanoes, such as the Mombacho
Volcano, which has a perfect cone shape. The
beautiful colonial city of Granada is also a
place worth a visit. Its colonial buildings,
cozy and easy going lifestyle and friendly people
make it a true forgotten paradise. Also, some
colorful and interesting islands are present
in the lake. Ometepe Island and Zapatera Island
are among the most beautiful. Also, after Mombacho
volcano’s eruption, hundreds of Islets
called the Granada Islets were created.
Lake Managua
Lake Managua or Lake Xolotlan is situated in
the north of the country. Currently, its waters
are a little bit contaminated by the sewage
system from Managua, the capital and largest
city which is situated on the shores of the
lake. However, the lake is very beautiful, subdivided
and split by peninsulas, its scenery is famous
worldwide, because of the volcanoes and mountain
ranges surrounding its waters.
