Culture and Museums of Nicaragua
Nicaragua is well known to
be a country rich in cultural treasures, strong
traditions and authentic and proud lifestyle.
Actually, Nicaragua, Panama and Guatemala are
the countries that best conserve their indigenous
inheritage. One of the examples is the famous
pottery, found throughout many areas of the
country. Clay and ceramic pottery, as well as
leather, handcrafts made of wood, textiles and
cloth and jewelry are found in almost any market
in smaller, medium and large cities and towns.
The marimba is the musical
instrument played in the western and central
plains. In most of Nicaragua, the visitor will
find a combination between Spanish elements
combined with indigenous elements, conserved
during the centuries. Along the Caribbean Coast,
the culture changes dramatically. The Miskito,
Suma, Rana and Criollo cultures takes over.
in places such as Bluefiels, Puerto Cabezas,
Wawashang and other areas along the east coast
have many cultural elements inherited from the
afro Caribbean culture and the local indigenous
population. Many colorful festivals take place
each year in the different regions of Nicaragua.
One of these is the Festival del Palo de Mayo,
held in Bluefields every year.
Colonial times
Nicaragua also inherited many
old buildings form the colonial times. These
can be seen especially in the cities of Granada
and Leon, where they are the main tourist attractions.
Indigenous heritage can also be found everywhere.
For example, the Zapatera Island has many indigenous
graveyards, where many objects, especially pottery
and clay are found. If you are interested in
culture and history, we recommend you to visit
Leon, Granada, Managua Downtown, the Caribbean
Coast and Matagalpa.
