| History
of Nicaragua

Nicaragua’s history
is basically divided in four categories.
Indigenous and Conquistadores times
Colonial times
19TH century
20th century until today
The indigenous times when the Maribiois, Chorotegas,
Nahualt indigenous people ruled over the Pacific
and Central areas of Nicaragua, while the Miskitos,
Suma and Rana people ruled over the Caribbean
plains. These are said came from South America,
while the tribes ruling over the Pacific Plains
and Central Nicaragua came from Mexican and
Maya descendance.
After the Spanish conquistadores colonized and
pacified the e country, the colonial times began.
Over the years, indigenous and Spanish culture
began to mix and combine, something you can
trace back even today.
Another interesting and important passage is
the fact that Caribbean pirates invaded and
plundered the city of Granada. The entrance
was the Rio San Juan River. Therefore, the Spanish
built the El Castillo fortress, situated on
the river and its purpose was to stop the invading
pirates.
In 1821, the Independence was signed. Until
them, Nicaragua belonged to the Capitania de
Guatemala, the capital of conquered territories
of Nicaragua and headquarters.
In the 19th century, William Walker, hired by
the city of Leon to conquer Nicaragua and fight
the City of Granada was expelled by the Nicaraguan
people, after the two cities came to an agreement.
The recent years have been troubled. Somoza,
Sandino and other rulers have come and gone.
Civil wars had hurt the country, especially
in the 70`s and 80`s. Today however, Nicaragua
enjoys a peaceful political climate and has
a lot to offer to the visitor.
